• A Miscellany of Men

Covering topics ranging from literature to philosophy, history to social criticism, this is a snapshot of thought on 20th-century Europe (and the world) by one of Europe's sharpest wits and ablest pens. With chapter titles ranging from “The Miser and His Friends” to “The Red Reactionary,” from “The Separatist and Sacred Things” to “The New Theologian” and “The Romantic in the Rain,” this volume includes 39 brief sketches of individuals, each one of whom illustrates an aspect of contemporary society. Social, historical, and religious thought all figure prominently in this book, making it of great use in any study of the literary, religious, and social aspects of early 20th-century England and Europe generally. It will be of interest to students and scholars of the essay in English literature. It is a fine introduction to Chesterton's social criticism, which remains unique for its willingness to criticize some of the uncomfortable truths about capitalism without straying toward an inhuman bureaucratic socialism.

G. K. Chesterton's writing career spanned 35 years and included nearly 100 books and thousands of articles in 125 different periodicals, on topics such as travel, economics, politics, religion, and philosophy. His command of the language made him one of the leading literary figures of early 20th century England. Dale Ahlquist earned his B.A. in history from Carleton College, and M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies from Hamline University. As president and cofounder of the American Chesterton Society, he is perhaps best known for his creating and hosting the widely acclaimed EWTN television series, G. K. Chesterton: The Apostle of Common Sense. He is one of the most respected Chesterton scholars in the world, and has written many works on Chesterton. He is publisher of Gilbert Magazine!, an associate editor of The Collected Works of G. K. Chesterton, and editor of The Gift of Wonder: The Many Sides of G. K. Chesterton; The Annotated Lepanto; and The Chesterton University Student Handbook. He has lectured on Chesterton at Yale University, Columbia University, and at the House of Lords in England.
