Twelve hundred years after the death of St. Boniface, Pope Pius XII pens for us Ecclesiae Fastos in commemoration of the life of missionary work that took Boniface to Germany and Gaul, where he founded many monasteries and converted thousands to the faith. His consecration as bishop was promptly followed by being made Archbishop and then Papal Legate for the Gallic territories. His apostolate was very fruitful. This, however, did not warrant his retirement: he went back to Friesland, where he and his disciples were martyred while administering the sacrament of Confirmation.
Boniface stands as an example for us still today, with his complete trust in Divine Providence, his unfailing love for his fellow men, his zealous missionary work in continual obedience to the voice of Rome, and his perseverance in his efforts to bring all men to God. In these times when Catholicism is once again a sign of contradiction, let us turn to St. Boniface for strength and consolation.
